The beginnings of pagina are rooted in the beginnings of scientific word processing in Germany a few years before it was actually founded. In the second half of the 1960s, Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Ott at the computing center of the University of Tübingen responsible for the "application of EDP in the humanities". There he developed the first kit program in 1969, which was tailored to the requirements of humanities texts and already mastered automatic footnote wrap in 1971. Wolf Reiner, production manager at Max Niemeyer Verlag in Tübingen, is quickly convinced of this innovation after initial tests - at a time when lead is still being used all over the country.

1973 founded Wolf Reiner together with Dr. Wilhelm Ott the company "pagina GmbH electronic typesetting", which from the beginning as a partner of the University of Tübingen contributed the typographic know-how to the development of TUSTEP - the "Tübingen system of word processing programs".

The proximity to the university brings close contacts to the developers of TEI, Unicode, SGML and later XML over the years. This means that pagina can strategically focus on these technologies before the official adoption of XML.

In 1996 the company was renamed "pagina GmbH Gesamtfertigung Wissenschaftlichen Werke" and the consequent further development from typesetting to data and publication specialist for the publishing industry. Since then, numerous pagina innovations have made it easier for publishers to access cross-media publishing.

In 2011 the company grew to 30 employees. The result of an internal reorganization is the new "pagina GmbH Publication Technologies" - still strong in sentence automation, but with new departments for development, digital humanities and MAM systems, its own XML industry solution for book publishers and a training and consulting area.
